Chryssa Kotoula
About
Chryssa Kotoula is a visual artist, designer and maker who works on ceramic
vessels that embrace materiality and craft. She often subverts reclaimed
matter, found objects, and studio detritus, transforming them into artistic objects. She finds inspiration in material research, vernacular architecture, craftsmanship and circular processes. In her recent work she revisits and adapts the traditional craft technique of terrazzo making in an effort to delve into an
improvisational, action-centric, embodied and situated activity. Utilizing a
version of circular terrazzo of her own invention, through a hand made process
rooted in craft traditions and archaeological insights, she creates a series of
vessels that project forms of anonymous art and architecture.
She is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at LUCA School of Arts where she received an extra two year training in the Glass and Ceramics Department. She holds a Masters in painting from the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and she has participated in collective workshops and creative initiatives where she had the chance to work on many multicultural collaborative projects across the fields of art, design and architecture. She also studied and worked in the fields of Permaculture and Natural Building in an effort to understand and delve deeper into the relationship with betwen humans and the natural environment. She works between Athens, Greece and Ghent, Belgium.
